Description
“The Fisherman Under the Great Tree” is a monochromatic watercolor on cardstock that continues the series of Asian landscapes featuring a boat and fisherman, this time focusing on a more intimate and compact format. In the foreground, on the left, a tree with a wide, drooping canopy leans toward the water: the dark trunk and sinuous branches support falling leaves and fronds rendered with a dense texture of marks, creating a sort of natural curtain over the lake’s surface. At the foot of the tree, the vegetation on the shore is depicted with backlit tufts and leaves, while the mountains in the background emerge in successive layers of increasingly lighter grays, suggesting distance and mist.
At the center of the lake, a fisherman sitting in a small dark boat rows slowly, casting a soft reflection on the water, which is built with light washes and a few horizontal lines. The absence of color, limited to a grayscale, reinforces the contemplative character of the image: everything plays between the black solidity of the tree and the boat and the lightness of the mountains and sky, transforming the scene into a sort of visual meditation on the relationship between nature and human presence. The 21 x 30 cm format with a mount makes the work perfect as wall art for reading nooks, studies, or small spaces, and ideally connects it to the other paintings in the fisherman series, with which it can be paired to create a narrative journey.
