Madonna del Sasso above Locarno is an original work created entirely in charcoal on paper (2026, Minusio, Switzerland). Maximum external dimensions, including mount and black frame, are 52 × 72 cm.
The drawing depicts the Church of the Madonna del Sasso, one of Locarno’s most evocative and recognizable landmarks, shown soaring above the hill and dominating the surrounding landscape. The religious complex emerges centrally, perched on the slope and surrounded by vegetation, a meeting point between human presence, nature, and the sky.
The church, with its slender bell tower, articulated facades, arches, and overlapping roofs, is described with great attention to architectural detail. In the foreground, dark trees and the profile of the hill frame the sanctuary, accentuating its elevated position. Beyond the building, Lake Maggiore opens up, while the mountains of the Locarno region rise in the background in a succession of profiles, slopes, and chiaroscuro.
The flight of birds above the bell tower adds a sense of lightness and spirituality to the composition. Wide, soft clouds, the quiet lake, and the silent presence of the church create a suspended atmosphere, almost out of time.
