Description

Madonna del Sasso between Sky and Mountains is an original watercolor on rough paper (2026, Minusio, Switzerland). Maximum external dimensions, including mount and black frame, are 52 × 72 cm.

The work depicts the Church of Madonna del Sasso, one of Locarno’s most evocative sites, perched on the hillside and immersed in a landscape of profound natural intensity. The sanctuary rises at the center of the composition, surrounded by trees and greenery, while the bell tower and architectural facades emerge elegantly through the foliage.

Unlike the monochromatic version, this watercolor interprets the Madonna del Sasso through light and color. Blue tones in the sky and mountains create a serene, airy depth; the greens of the vegetation frame the scene naturally, while the warm hues of the roofs and facades lend the architecture a luminous, welcoming presence.

Tree branches open at the sides like a natural frame, guiding the eye toward the church, Lake Maggiore, and the distant mountains. The clear sky, streaked with soft clouds, amplifies the sense of space and gives the scene an almost suspended atmosphere. The foreground vegetation, rendered with denser, more textured brushstrokes, contrasts with the lightness of the mountains and sky.

The result is a luminous and contemplative landscape, where the Madonna del Sasso appears as a place of spirituality, protection, and harmony. The church seems to watch over the city and the lake from above, enveloped in the stillness of nature and the light of the mountains.

The rough surface of the paper enhances the watercolor’s transparencies, chromatic variations, and the irregular edges of the brushstrokes. The piece is ideal for those who love Ticino landscapes, religious architecture, and poetic representations of recognizable places. It is sold with a mount and black frame, ready to be displayed.
