Description
Mountains Emerging from the Mist is an original work created in watercolor, ink, and pencil on semi-rough paper (2026, Minusio, Switzerland). The maximum outer dimensions, with mat included and without frame, are 21 × 30 cm.
This monochromatic watercolor depicts an essential and powerful mountain landscape, built almost entirely on variations of gray. On the left, a large rock wall rises vertically, defined by overlapping washes that trace ridges, cavities, and rock slides, while behind it other peaks follow in succession, increasingly lighter, seeming to dissolve into the haze. On the right side, in the foreground, a formation of dark rocks hosts a few small trees with slender trunks and graphic foliage, breaking up the mineral mass with their vegetal presence and introducing a sense of scale to the landscape.
Above, a group of birds in flight crosses the clear sky, adding an accent of life and movement to an otherwise still scene, where diffused light envelops mountains, rocks, and water. The surface of the lake or river below is suggested by a few soft horizontal lines, sufficient to evoke a muted reflection of the peaks and ground the landscape in real space. The use of grayscale alone, together with the simplification of forms, gives the painting a meditative and almost abstract character, open to personal interpretations. The 21 × 30 cm format with mat makes it ideal for display alone in an intimate corner or paired with other mountain landscapes from the same series to create a small “notebook” of interior views.
